Golf 101: A Beginner’s Guide to Golf

If you currently find yourself thinking about getting started in golf, you might not know where to turn first. There are more questions than answers, especially if you don’t really know anyone who is already a golfer. Reading this blog will make you a big step closer to getting started in this wonderful sport.

What Are The Rules Of Golf?

Golf has a reputation as a complicated game, but for a beginner, it’s best to keep it simple. As a starting point, know that the lowest score always wins. Completing each hole,, in as few strokes as possible is the goal.

Aim For Par

On each hole, you will see a posted “par”. Par is the target number of strokes to finish that hole. With almost no exceptions on a normal golf course, pars are either three, four, or five strokes.

Play Where It Lies

One of the core rules in golf is that you are supposed to play the ball as it lies, meaning you don’t touch it before hitting your shot. There are two exceptions to this rule:

First, you can touch your ball at the start of each hole when placing it on the tee.

Second, once you are on the green, you are allowed to mark your ball so you can pick it up and clean it.

That’s it. Otherwise, leave the ball alone and hit each shot to the best of your ability.

What Is A Penalty Stroke?

There are also parts of the golf course where you will have to add a penalty stroke to your score. If you hit your ball into a marked hazard, for example, you’ll need to add a stroke to your score and drop a ball in a designated area.

Or, if you hit the ball out of bounds , you will need to add a stroke and try again from the same spot. This is the harshest penalty in golf, as it’s stroke and distance combined, so avoid going out of bounds when at all possible.

What Is Basic Golf Etiquette?

For a beginning golfer, learning etiquette is just as important as learning the rules. Proper golf course etiquette is how you get along with other golfers and respect each other on the course. Here are a few of the key points to know:

  1. Keep the pace of play moving. Nothing frustrates other golfers like a player who is taking forever to get through each hole. It’s the time between shots that really adds up, so keep yourself moving along and other players will appreciate you for it.

  2. Take care of the course. When you make a swing and take a divot out of the ground, replace the divot. When your ball lands on the green and leaves a little ball mark, fix it. It’s everyone’s job collectively to care for the course that you are playing.

  3. Obey the dress code. This one varies from course to course. Some places are rather picky about what golfers wear, while other facilities don’t care at all. Generally speaking, country clubs are more particular about dress code than public courses, but just check on the website of any course you are going to play to confirm what is expected in regard to attire.

  4. Stay quiet when others are hitting. This just might be the “Golden Rule” of golf. When other people in your group are hitting, or even when others in a nearby group are hitting, stop talking and stand still to avoid making other noises. You don’t have to be silent throughout an entire round of golf, but you should respect other players and give them a chance to swing without being distracted.

What  Equipment Do You Need To Play Golf?

Golf is a game that requires some specific equipment to play. Don’t go overboard and spend thousands of dollars on gear as a total beginner. Instead, shop smart and pick up things just to get started.

  • Clubs. You’ll need a set of clubs to start playing. A basic set of golf clubs  include a driver, fairway woods, irons, wedges, and a putter. It’s perfectly acceptable to buy used clubs, or you might choose to purchase a complete beginner set that includes everything you need for a single, modest price.

  • Balls. You obviously have to have golf balls, but they don’t need to be fancy ones in the beginning. Buy whatever relatively cheap golf balls you can to get started, as you’ll lose plenty of them along the way.

  • Bag. Everything you take onto the course needs to be carried in a bag. If you plan on walking your rounds of golf, pick up a light bag that only holds the essentials.

  • Accessories. Some of the small accessories you’ll also want to have available include tees, ball markers, a glove, and a towel. These little extras can go a long way toward making your rounds more enjoyable and comfortable.

How To Play Your First Round

So, you’ve collected some equipment, visited the driving range a few times, and are now feeling ready to venture out onto the course for the first time. That’s great! But how do you get started and actually play a round?

It begins with making a tee time. ake a tee time and aim for a time when the course isn’t likely to be busy. If at all possible, avoid weekend mornings and look for a time on a weekday afternoon. This will give you a more relaxed experience without so many people around.

Next, choose the right tee box. As a total beginner, play from the shortest tees that the course offers. As a beginner, that likely means the shortest ones they offer are the ones for you. There will be plenty of time later to venture back and make the course more difficult after you have some experience.

Finally, if at all possible, try to play your first round with someone else. If you know an experienced golfer, ask them if they will play with you and show you around the course a bit. Golf is a social game, so it’s generally more fun when playing with someone else. If you don’t have any golfing friends, ask at your local course if they offer beginner groups or anything else that will help you meet other golfers and have playing partners when you tee it up.

How Does Scoring Work In Golf?

You don’t need to be too serious about scoring when you first get started. In fact, you don’t even have to keep score at all if you don’t want to. However, as you play more and more, you’ll likely want to start keeping track of your scores properly so you can chart your progress.

What Is A Golf Handicap?

By far the best way to do this is by registering for a handicap. You can do this at your local course, and it comes along with a relatively modest annual cost. After each round, you will access the handicap system and enter your score. Those scores will be tracked over time, and you will be given a handicap. You can use this to enter local tournaments, if you so choose, or you can just use it to see how much you are getting better. Many golfers take pride in working on their handicap and getting it down as low as possible year after year.
